One student is selected each year to represent Mississippi on the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Youth Leadership Council. The selection is made at the Cooperatives Leaders Workshop through a comprehensive process that includes an interview.
The student chosen will serve a one-year term and participate in additional activities: the NRECA YLC Summer Program in Arlington, Virginia in July of 2027, the annual meeting of the Electric Cooperatives of Mississippi in Biloxi in September of 2027, and the NRECA annual meeting, held in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2028 and will receive a $2,500 cash scholarship.
This distinguished honor provides many other opportunities. Past winners have served as summer staff members for Mississippi Congressional leaders. Others have worked for NRECA in Washington, D.C. as part-time summer employees.
There will also be two additional scholarships awarded to students who are interviewed for the YLC in the amounts of $1,500 (first alternate) and $1,000 (second alternate). If you would like more information contact Chris Alexander, ECM Youth Program Director, at alexander@ecm.coop.
